Overveiw
the creation of a virtual world that users can interact with. This virtual world should be designed in such a way that users would find it difficult to tell the difference from what is real and what is not. Furthermore, VR is usually achieved by the wearing of a VR helmet or goggles similar to the Oculus Rift.
How do you use it?
To use AR one needs:
1. Smart phone, iPad, or tablet. 2. VR app. 3. VR Headset. 4. optional accessories like headphones, or joystick, or bluetooth controllers. |
VR Headset:
The most important piece of a virtual reality kit is the headset, a device like a thick pair of goggles that goes over your eyes. The more expensive, higher quality headsets need to be connected to a computer to run apps and games, while some cheaper ones use a cellphone clipped to the front of the headset. |
All headsets need to be used alongside a good quality pair of headphones, and there are other optional accessories from hand controllers to treadmills that are all designed to enhance your simulated experience of being in another world. Hand controllers translate your real-world gestures into whatever game or application you’re using, although standard gaming joypads can also be used.
VR App:
VR devices have their own app stores, similar to smartphone app stores, where you can browse and download games and apps. Some of these stores are accessed using the device itself, while others – the VR section of the Steam digital games store, for example – can be browsed on your computer. |

Google Cardboard: How it works!
In this YouTube video he explains how to use Google Cardboard VR set and enjoy this tech.
Advantages of the technology
- VR enhances students' engagement which increases learning effectiveness. The VR technology makes them feel that they experience the real locations and hearing the real sounds and seeing the real things.
- The VR could support providing every student in the country or the whole world with equal access to education.
- Used in various fields such as in military, education and health care.
- Easy to use.
- Affordable. The options available in market vary from low-cost headset cardboard to high quality set.
- Can be used in places with no electricity. One can prepare materials to use them off line.
- The universities could save millions of dollars by letting the students perform virtual experiments before they go into the real laboratory.
- Perform dangerous experiments in the virtual labs will ensure students' safety as well.
- Virtual reality gives a full and detailed view of an object.
Weaknesses of the technology
- Still in developing phase, needs more education materials. Though the virtual reality technology is used in various fields but is still experimental
- File size: Current VR platforms require a some kind of download to begin. Often the file sizes are over 1 GB and requisitely, slow.
- Video quality: due to many factors most of videos available for VR are in low or even poor quality.
- Social Consequences: There is an addictive quality of Virtual Reality environments that should not be ignored. Those who are regular users of these spaces, even in its developmental state find that it can be hard to stay away.
- Health matters: some people report headache or other health issues after using VR for long time.
- Training in VR environment is not real: another con of virtual reality is that a person who has been trained in VR environment may do well in that environment, but he cannot perform well in the real world.
Examples of how may this technology support teaching and learning
Virtual laboratory simulator for science class:
In this Ted conference the speaker Michael Bodekaer shows how virtual-reality headset and the tablet are going to completely revolutionize science education. And how it can make any science teacher more than twice as effective.

Using VR in math class could help students practice drawing shapes using grids. Watch how they use it for this practice in Canada.
History class:
VR helps engage students in history classes, for instance, instead of telling students about Egypt the teacher can use VR tech to help students experience and explore and travel in virtual reality to Egypt. Watch this example:
